Comparing Florida Georgia Line's Music to Christianity

The two boys in Florida Georgia Line have always believed in their faith, in fact at one point they were both leading worship at their hometown church. But only on their newest album "Dig Your Roots", released in 2016, do you see them really include and relate to their faith in their music.

"H.O.L.Y" which stands for "high on loving you", was FGL's first single off their third album. It has some similarities to modern Christian music n terms of an uplifting message and overcoming personal struggles and trials. Throughout the song we learn about the struggles that Tyler (and Brian) experiences and how we overcomes them thanks to his faith and his wife. The chorus repetition of the word "Holy" may bring to mind a hymn from church. Of course, they had to have a line in the second verse about laying her down, to get her "singin' hallelujah" and "touching heaven", because it is kind of FGL's specialty, even if it's the kind of pleasure that contradicts what the song itself is about.

The song's "high on loving you" line incorporates the idea of religious ecstasy as a substitute intoxicant. Love is salvation, but it is also a drug, is what the song seems to be trying to tell us.  There's a conflicting aspect to this, as obsessive love and religious love have both been known to make people do some nuts things. "H.O.L.Y." doesn't seem to be a warning of these feelings though, FGL seem pretty happy to be consumed by it.

"Our backgrounds in Christian music may not be a huge influence in our music right now, but I'll tell you what, theres a huge correlation in leading worship and leading 10,000 people in an arena. I would say that's exactly where we got our feet wet in how we lead people, how we interact with people and how to get them connecting in us. leading worship is how that happened. It might not be the same music, but if you can get people engaged in what you're doing in church, you can easily do that at a bar or an areana or anywhere else." -Brian Kelley

"We both dabbled in writing Christian music, i mean, we're songwriters at heart, so we just take it day by day, and obviously country is the core. We've written any kind of song you can think of - some stuff doesn't even have its own genre. it just depends on the day. We like to have fun and keep things fresh and really challenge ourselves and find a way to say something that no one else has said." -Brian Kelley

A lot of the songs on their newest album "Dig Your Roots" have involvement of faith in them. For example "God, Your Mama and Me", "Dig Your Roots" and "H.O.L.Y".
